Softball team in it to win it

Just a few weeks ago, the Owls softball team was fighting to make it to the playoffs. Winning their last five games of the Western State Conference finalized their spot in the 2013 California Community College Athletic Association Regional Playoffs.

In order to have a successful defense, you need a strong infield. Luckily, the Owls softball team has just that.

Made up of sophomore Shyann Ramirez at first base, freshman Alyssa Lozano at second, sophomore Bre Lockett at third base and sophomore Jessica Gonzalez as shortstop, the infield played a crucial part in securing a conference of 14-4 and an overall of 24-12.

Despite suffering an ongoing shoulder injury and having limited play time, Shyann Ramirez has kept the optimism high amongst the team.

Ramirez’s positive attitude does not go unnoticed says sophomore, Carissa Bender.

“She always has a good attitude even when the team is down,” said pitcher/utility fielder, Carissa Bender, 19. “She is a great team player and she’s like a sister to me.”

Along with staying positive, the team has been able to push themselves towards victory.

“I’m really excited for playoffs,” said second baseman, Alyssa Lozano, 20. “As a team, I think we are ready to come in playing hard.”

Continuing, Lozano stated that she wanted the team to succeed and advance into the play offs more than anything. Her wish seemingly came true as the Owls face off against the Cypress Chargers in the first playoff game starting Saturday May 4, 2013.

As for the teams biggest challenge, Lozano says “our biggest challenge would have to be scoring runs from the very beginning, we tend to get a slow start.”
