Top $$ trivia

question-marksIf you spent any amount of time with me during 2004, you knew I was liable to do two things at any moment: bust out the A-Town Stomp from Usher’s “Yeah” video (which only got awkward during church) and bring up Ken Jennings’ record-setting Jeopardy streak in unrelated conversations (really awkward during church).

My stomps-per-month stats have severely dropped since then, but my love of trivia hasn’t. If you’re like me and love to put your knowledge of almost-useless information to the test, get a team together and visit one of these following places. It’s free to play, restaurants offer house credit as prizes—and you might just give the A-Town Stompers a run for their money.

  • The Press Restaurant, 129 Harvard Avenue, Claremont: With a seven-college consortium inside this small city’s borders—Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Scripps, Pitzer, Claremont McKenna, Claremont Graduate University and the Keck Graduate Institute—The Press is the nighttime gathering spot for Claremont’s 21-and-up crowd. Games start later than most, and teams of five or more are recommended. Prizes are modest, but a special 5th round prize is sure to please any winner. Some of the brightest liberal arts and engineering minds in the country are at these games though, so be prepared for some tough questions. (Tuesdays, 9:30 p.m. Prizes: $20, $10, bonus prize)
  • Buffalo Wild Wings, 2548 East Workman Avenue, West Covina: The go-to wing and watering hole for your above-average sports fan is definitely Buffalo Wild Wings. To cater to its audience, BWWs offers a more casual, toned down version of trivia, sponsored by trivia company Buzztime. Instead of a live DJ, questions are displayed on a TV screen and answered via electronic device. The redeeming feature of Buzztime trivia is the ability to play nationwide. If you log in to Buzztime.com, you can access the schedule of national games. What’s more, you can take your team name and points to any Buzztime location and pick up where you left off. (Daily, see Buzztime.com for prizes)
  • House of Wings, 2317 D St, La Verne: This one’s for our fans. The Clarion’s very own Javier Galaviz hosts a trivia show at the newest sports bar in La Verne. For the sports nut living east of Glendora, House of Wings offers an easier commute than the above-mentioned BWWs. Questions here fall in the medium category, with a different featured category every week and a good dose of current events questions. The house prizes here are easily the best of the bunch, so if you’re up for a challenge try walking in with no cash, order some food, and let your brain be your wallet. And if that doesn’t work out, I hear the DJ is a pretty cool guy. (Mondays, 7:30 p.m. Prizes: $50, $20, $10)
