The Citrus College Cosmetology department is pulling out all the stops to ensure the Annual Spring Hair Show will have that ‘wow’ factor.

The Spring 2016 Hair Show will take place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m on May 6. The event will begin at the Student Center, where people can watch the preparation for the runway show which takes place after inside the Haugh Performing Arts Center.

Cosmetology student Savannah Tannehill said the event gets bigger and bigger every year.

Every year the Cosmetology department changes the theme of the show, with a few exceptions, that continually find a place in the rotation.

“This year, we are doing an avant-garde and contemporary theme,” Cosmetology student Summer Barratt said. “So you are definitely going to be seeing more extravagant, more crazy hairstyles and a lot of really crazy colors and extreme cuts.”

Avant-garde is one of the recurring themes that often finds a place in the hair show, Tannehill said.

Cosmetology student Nina Hagentorn said the hair show is exciting for the students participating in the show, as they have an opportunity to share their work with others.

“We all get to show our real skills outside of the school, instead of just inside,” Hagentorn said. “So it will be really cool to see what everyone puts together.”

“For us, it’s a huge deal here,” Barratt said. “It gives us a chance to really show our creativity and to give us a challenge. And for us, it’s a competition, so we really work hard to accomplish that.”

Barratt, who is participating in her second show at Citrus, encourages people to attend the hair show, as the Cosmetology department presents the culmination of all their work from this semester.

“You are going to experience something you get to see on L.A.’s fashion week or on a runway show,” Barratt said. “You get to see what it is like for a student, especially if we are going to be doing it for our career.”

The annual hair show is a way for the students to put their names out there, Tannehill said.

“This and a lot of our open houses are really getting our program out there and getting the recognition that we need,” Tannehill said.

The show is considered to be the biggest show of the year put on by the department, Hagentorn said.

“We have one during Halloween time,” Hagentorn said. “But this one is definitely the huge show.”

Cosmetology student Bailey Turczak said the hair show is a competition amongst the students and professors have discussed giving prizes to the students with the best work.

“It’s pretty nerve-wracking in the beginning, just ’cause you don’t know what to expect,” Turczak said. “But in the end, you’re putting something out that’s your final product, so you’re pretty proud and excited about it.”

Tickets will cost $15 for the hair show and Turczak said people can expect surprises this year.

“It’s gonna be pretty wild,” Turczak said. “Pretty out there.”
