Citywide power failure closes Citrus College

Stopped elevator traps two students, one pregnant

Southern California Edison says power will be restored by 3 p.m.

A power outage across Glendora canceled all classes on campus on Oct. 15.

Students and professors said they were confused if classes were still being held after power went out around 11:20 a.m.

A Citrus Alert sent at 12:42 p.m. said “Classes are canceled. Await further information.”

A Southern California Edison phone recording said Glendora was experiencing “a widespread power outage” caused by “an unconfirmed problem.”

A Citrus Facilities and Maintenance representative said the Santa Ana winds caused the power outage. The Southern California Edison recording said power would be restored by 3 p.m. or by Tuesday morning.

A pregnant student and a man were stuck in the elevator for a half hour in the LB building when the outage started.

Child development major, Mary Hoppi said she called campus safety when the elevator she was in lost power.

“We tried to knock on the door, and we tried the help button on the elevator,” Hoppi said. “They told us ‘we’re gonna help right away but stick around longer.’”

Security and maintenance technicians removed then pair after 27 minutes.

“Of course I prayed, to my God,” Hoppi said. “God responded through Campus Safety. After I heard the voice, I’m feeling kinda safe.”

When security took them out, Hoppi said her life “came back when door opened.”

Campus Safety announced classes canceled on loudspeakers from their patrol vehicles.

Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Gustavo Medina leads the department’s wind event task force. He said he did not know about the Glendora outage.

“I’m unaware of other wind-caused outages across L.A. County,” Medina said.

Dean of Visual and Performing Arts John Vaughan said the college was clearing out all classrooms and classes have been cancelled for the rest of the day.

By 1:45 p.m. students flooded parking lots and nearby bus stops to leave campus.

Update: A Citrus Alert was sent by phone at 8:37 p.m.

“Power has been restored,” the alert said. “All classes and normal operations to resume on Tuesday.”
