Student Health Center offers ’emotional and mental wellness’ to students amid COVID-19

The Student Health Center is operating remotely for the time being due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the college’s closure. The center offers help in emotional and mental wellness to students and support in coping with COVID-19.

Citrus College’s Health Center in the Student Services building is open remotely from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to noon on Friday.

The center offers support with issues such as loneliness, struggles with school, trouble with relationships, LGBTQ support , experience with loss or grief, body image, self-esteem and concerns about drugs or alcohol, nurse Shauna Gorham-Bigby said in a May 15 Zoom conference.

Professionals at the center offer mental health workshops. The Student Health Center’s website said all workshops are conducted by licensed therapists. Students should contact the Student Health Center for meeting dates and times.

Students have access to one-on-one counseling sessions with a licensed therapist but need to make an appointment for these services. Students have access to six therapist meetings a semester.

The Student Health Center also offers free access to over-the-counter medications such as birth control and Advil.

All students who are currently enrolled and have paid their student health fee have access to everything the Student Health Center offers.

Immunizations and any services that would require the use of a blood lab are not covered by the student health fee. For these, students need to pay for the cost.

Gorham-Bigby said on May 15 in a Zoom conference the Student Health Center offers all services an urgent care at a hospital would offer and most services allow walk-ins.
