Developing Story

This story was updated 3:12 p.m. March 14 to reflect statistics for new COIVID-19 cases and deaths in Spain and to reflect an announcement Spain made for a nationwide lockdown.

A correction was made at 3:01 p.m. on March 14 to reflect the confirmed deaths of COVID-19 is not 1,016, that is the number of deaths in Italy due to COVID-19.

A correction was made at 2:46 p.m. on March 14. The data recorded for COVID-19 cases and deaths in Spain is from The World Health Organization, not the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A link was shared from the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that was redirected to The World Health Organization.

Citrus College’s spring 2020 session of the study abroad program will return home from Seville, Spain due to precautions taken for COVID-19, John Morris, the study abroad specialist said in an email.

“We’re bringing the students back now and moving their classes online,” Morris said in an email.

President Donald Trump said in an address to the public travel from Europe to the United States is banned for the next 30 days starting midnight March 13, but Americans who are abroad are an exception and can travel back to the U.S. as long as they’ve done the appropriate screenings, CNBC said in an article.

The ban affects 24 European countries including Spain, one of the countries that have been “badly hit” with COVID-19, in an effort to keep new COVID-19 cases from entering U.S. shores, an article from CNBC said.

On March 13, a report for COVID-19 cases in Spain by the World Health Organization said the total confirmed cases of the coronavirus are 2,965 and 84 confirmed deaths due to coronavirus.

On March 14 Spain declared a nationwide lockdown for a an initial 15 day-period, but could be extended, an article from The Washington Post said.

On March 14, a report for COVID-19 cases in Spain by the World Health Organization said the total confirmed cases of the coronavirus are 4,231 and 120 confirmed deaths due to coronavirus.

The total increase of cases for COVID-19 in Spain are 1,266 new cases and 36 new deaths since March 13.
