Review: “Addicted to Americana” dazzles at the Haugh

Charles Phoenix shared a slideshow collection of his adventures across America as part of his comedy routine.

He had an audience of hundreds chuckling early and often through his show on Oct. 20 at the Haugh Performing Arts Center.

“Haugh, like ha, ha, ha,” Phoenix said. “…Where do we begin?”

Phoenix asked the question repeatedly.

He sauntered onstage wearing a sparkling orange suit. After intermission he changed into a red polka dot suit.

Phoenix described how he made the red suit. The showman went to a patio furniture fabric store. He said he initially avoided the polka dots because they  would rub off on his inner thigh.

Phoenix showed off his solution — walk like a penguin.

During a Q and A section, when audience members asked about his wardrobe, he answered “That’s none of your business!”

Phoenix was being coy. A grin would sneak across his face whenever he joked about his decadence. He said he frequented shopping malls.

Phoenix claimed he was not educated at school but at Disneyland, his dad’s car lot and the Montclair Plaza. And he said the Eastland shopping center reminds him of Tomorrowland.

Phoenix said when he orders breakfast he asks for a stack of pancakes with a face.

He said the funniest flapjacks he’s received were Mickey Mouse shaped with a sausage for a nose. He said the sausage looked like dog poop.

Audience members ate it up. They loved his stories about their favorite donut shops, Donut Man and the Donut Hole.

He showed off his desert creation the “Cherpumple”— a three-layer cake with a pie inside each layer.

Phoenix rode on a Cherpumple float in the Anaheim Halloween Parade Saturday, Oct. 27.

“Addicted to Americana” made viewers nostalgic for a time they may or may not have lived through.

Phoenix recently released a book with the same name. Merchandise can be bought on the website https://www.charlesphoenix.com/books/ He is performing again on Nov. 10 at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater in Los Angeles.
