Online-class at home support during college closure amidst COVID-19 fears

Instructure, the creator of Canvas, is preparing for an increase of the quantity of users who will be switching over from physical classrooms to online, Chief Customer Experience Officer of Instructure Melissa Loble said.

Loble said she updated Citrus faculty and students that Canvas is preparing for the increased quantity of users by expanding Canvas’ staff support and training offered for all institutes.

As of March 12, all lecture and lab classes at Citrus College are cancelled through March 17 due to the escalation of COVID-19 cases. Beginning March 18, all classes will be through online instruction until April 6.

Loble also said Instructure partners such as BigBlueButton are offering web conferencing for online learning.

Portfolium is a platform that displays the work of students for future employers or professors. It is exclusively for those with Canvas accounts and Canvas Studio used for live video quizzing, the Instructure website said.

Furthermore, Loble said she has provided a template on Canvas for teachers who are preparing to move face-to-face classes onto an online platform.

The Canvas template is designed for instructors who “are already lacking time and can begin with a pre-built point of launch. Power users can take and modify the template without needing to start from zero,” Instructure’s article on the effects of education due to COVID-19 said.

Classes are to remain online until April 6 or until more updates develop.
