War on the world’s global pandemic: movie relations to COVID-19 pandemic

Seeking refuge in hopes of a solution seems like the only answer in the world’s current pandemic. While the horrors of death tolls spike across the United States and other countries due to COVID-19, people wonder what will happen hereafter.

Admittedly, movies such as “The Purge” that held an annual 12-hour activity where all criminal activity is legal, “Contagion” includes the spread of a global pandemic where there seems to be no cure and “I Am Legend” where a man-made plague modifies life as we know it. All movies portray a dark future for society that potentially wipes humanity from existence.

The idea of a single disease turning humans into different species and the turn of events transforming society as portrayed in movies give people a reason to worry about what will happen to the future of society.

Will there be a cure if another potential breakout happens again? How will people react to another breakout? These are questions asked with otherworldly answers.

Steven Spielberg’s 2005 film “War of the Worlds” demonstrates people’s actions during a time of invasion with extraterrestrial beings and the idea of “anti-war” where civilians only try to save themselves and their families instead of fighting back.

Dealing with the recent COVID-19 pandemic is equally relative to the plot of “War of the Worlds”. Although the movie portrays plots of fiction related to COVID-19, nevertheless the virus is not fiction and should not be taken as one.

“They (the threats) are a wake-up call to face our fears as we confront a force intent on destroying our way of life,” Speilberg said in an interview with Reader’s Digest.

Currently, people all over the world are cooped up at home due to COVID-19 and are paranoid to even go outside. With the fears of becoming infected and spread to those who haven’t been infected with the virus, all must refer to a cautious and healthier way of living life.

“War of the Worlds” portrays people fending for themselves, as well as focusing on their own families.

In tough situations like these, whether aliens are invading or a spread of an infectious virus occurs, society must take into account everything they can do to minimize threats.

In “War of the Worlds” characters, who are normal civilians, begin taking action in their own hands by facing their fears and confronting the alien-threats themselves.

In reality, the heroes of the world, such as doctors, nurses, paramedics and so many others are out there fighting for a cure to change society back to normal and reduce the number of victims lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.
