Citrus College hires private security company during campus closure due to COVID-19 pandemic

Developing story

The Board of Trustees approved the budget of $40,000 to hire a private security company at a Board of Trustees meeting on April 7.

Vice President of finance and administrative services Claudette Dain said via email on April 13th, said that hiring a private firm is a way to help maintain the school and health of staff while the campus is closed during the COVID-19 emergency.

Dain said the district contracted with Citiguard. The new security guards will not be armed and will patrol the entire campus.

“The health and safety of our students, faculty and staff remain our top priority amidst the COVID-19 emergency,” Dain said in an email, on April 13th. “While the physical campus is closed, the need to safeguard the campus remains.”

Nothing was confirmed on whether or not any criminal events led to hiring additional security. Director of Campus safety Ben Macias was contacted twice for a response on April 13 and 18 and has not responded since.

“Working in conjunction with our Director of Campus Safety, Mr. Ben Macias, the contracted security company has allowed Citrus College to maintain security services while ensuring social distancing and “safer-at-home” practices for our Campus Safety officers,” Dain said in an email on April 13th.
