New ‘ask a nurse’ program assists students with physical and medical advice

Citrus offers a new program known as the “ask a nurse” program inviting students to talk to nurses at the Student Health Center about any medical advice, mental health support or referrals that students may need.

“The ask a nurse program came out of the need to help and service students,” said Laura Shurtleff of the Student Health Center.

The available services in the “ask a nurse” program are accessing information about local urgent care clinics and emergency rooms, obtaining referrals to free or low-cost services, setting up a time to speak with a mental health therapist and answers to healthcare questions.

“It seems pretty important that students hear about this service, I actually did not know about this service until it was brought to my attention,” says Citrus English major Chris Mercado.

The nurses can lead you to other forms of resources such as the Los Angeles County Access Hotline, disaster distress hotline and student health crisis hotline.

“Most of the calls are for birth control, urinary symptoms, mental health resources and community resources like food, WiFi and support for school,” says Citrus College nurse Shauna Bigby.

For a full flyer pertaining to the program, an email has been sent to all student emails for  crisis lines and additional other resources.

Students can contact the “ask a nurse” program at (626) 914-8671 to speak a nurse or email directly to Laura Shurtleff at lshurtleff@citruscollege.edu.
