Study Abroad program to Madrid, Spain tentative to continue amid COVID-19

The study abroad program recently announced a tentative Madrid, Spain program for spring of 2021.

While study abroad programs to Oslo, Rome and Paris, France have been canceled, the trip to Madrid, Spain is confirmed to continue until further notice.

Study abroad specialist John Morris said the COVID-19 pandemic shows us how important it is to communicate and have an international exchange with other countries and cultures.

“Study abroad is something that can facilitate that cultural exchange,” Morris said.

To participate in this educational experience, students need to fill out an interest form for their study abroad trip. The interest form for the Madrid, Spain study abroad program is located on the Citrus College study abroad program website.

Morris said students will get one step closer to, as defined by the study abroad website an “enlightening, maturing and life-changing experience,” if students fill out an interest form and research ways to assist funding their study abroad program.

Students can receive financial aid for their study abroad trip through the Pell Grant and the Cal Grant. According to the U.S. Department of Education, students can receive Pell Grants and Cal Grants by completing a free application for student aid, or FAFSA. Pell Grants and Cal Grants, unlike loans is free money that doesn’t need to be paid back.

The amount depends on your financial need, costs to attend school, status as a full-time or part-time student and plans to attend school for a full academic year or less,” the Department of Education’s website said.

Students interested may also take out loans.

“The best option is a subsidized loan, which is a loan that has no interest,” Morris said during a  Study Abroad workshop on May 15.

Jessica Ortiz, a Citrus student who attended the workshop, said that while she thought the information provided was thorough, she would’ve liked to see more detail regarding financial aid for transfer students interested in the programs.

Students can view the Citrus study abroad website for updates on the Madrid, Spain program.
