Alternative grading options for Citrus College students: FAQs and their answers

What is the ‘Pass/No Pass’ grading option?

The Diablo Valley College’s FAQs on their college’s website said if students satisfactorily complete a course at the “C” or better level, students who choose the “Pass/No Pass” option receive a “Pass (P)” on their transcript.

“If you pass, you receive credit for the course with no positive impact on your GPA,” an article by Amanda Johnson on study.com said. “If you don’t pass, then you don’t receive credit and there’s usually no negative impact on your GPA.”

The article “What to Know About Pass/Fail Classes in College” written on April 3 by Josh Moody said college officials say the Pass/Fail grading option is “a way of taking a class without worrying about a grade” in order for students to focus more on their learning outcomes, not their letter grade.

What grading options do you have at Citrus College?

The Citrus College Academic Senate changed grading standards to allow students to choose a Pass/No Pass option for their classes during the spring 2020 semester.

The Citrus website says Academic Senate’s new policy  extends the deadline for the “pass” or “no pass” option to one week prior to the end of the semester.

The option allows students to select a Pass/No Pass grading choice for more than one class per term. The new rule permits all courses to become eligible for the “pass” or “no pass” grade option.

How can you verify the Pass/No Pass grading option for a course?

Students must email the Pass/No Pass petition in the “Student Sufficiency and Success” subsection using a student email account to the Admissions and Records Office at admissions@citruscollege.edu to select the grading option, the Citrus website says.

On the Citrus College website on citruscollege.edu, click on COVID-19 updates on the header of the Citrus College homepage. Click on the “I’m having trouble with my classes” section, and then click the subsection “Student Sufficiency and Success.” The subsection displays information on the Pass/No Pass option, dropping classes, and the financial aid impact of withdrawal.

Can my professor influence my decision for the ‘Pass/No Pass’ grading option?

The executive order made by California Community College Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley grants colleges the ability to waive state and local regulations related to the Pass/No Pass grading.

Any other orders of emergency declared by the state, county or local authorities affecting the delivery of instruction outside of the student’s control can affect the waivers for choosing the Pass/No Pass option.

Otherwise, the waivers will remain in place.

What are the steps for dropping a class due to a COVID-19 emergency?

Students can fill out and send the Exceptional Action Petition to the Admissions and Records Office at admissions@citruscollege.edu using a student email account, the Citrus website said.

The Citrus website said a withdrawal doesn’t count as an attempt for enrolling in a course for the purposes of repeating a course.

The website also said an additional document is not needed for withdrawal due to a  COVID-19-related emergency.

Until when can students submit a petition to drop a class?

The subsection “Dropping classes as a result of COVID-19” under the main section  “Student Services Areas and COVID-19″ said students need to submit their petition to the Admission and Records office until the end of the Spring 2020 semester.

Will I be reimbursed for the classes I drop?

The subsection “Dropping classes as a result of COVID-19” under the main section “Student Services and COVID-19” said students will also receive a refund of the enrollment fee.

Students withdrawing a class with a “EW” or “W” on their transcript will be subject to a Pell Grant freeze and recalculation and return to the Title IV calculation, the Citrus College website said

But if a student has a valid COVID-19-related emergency, withdraws from a class and receives an “EW” on their transcript students do not need to repay their financial aid funds and have no negative implications for their future financial aid, the Citrus College website said.

Students will still continue to receive financial aid.

The Citrus College website said an appeal from a student isn’t needed for those following the “Satisfactory Academic Progress” standards. The CARE program allows Citrus College to exclude any credits a student attempted that weren’t completed from, SAP calculations for students with a COVID-19-related emergency.
