Most people feel relatively safe while hiking in the mountains north of the San Gabriel Valley.
Jake Entrup, a former player for the Citrus College baseball team during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 years, was home preparing for graduate school after transferring to Hope International University.
Entrup, his mother, and two dogs decided to go on a hiking trip to a trail near Higginbotham Park and Claremont.
It was not unusual for Entrup and his family to go on hiking trips, but the weekend of July 18-19 would prove eventful.
“You know, I was just running with my dog. I was turning a corner and next thing you know I got bit,” Entrup said in an interview with KTLA5. Entrup then saw the rattlesnake scurry under some bushes.
His mother rushed to his aid, accompanied by a nurse who happened to be hiking nearby.
Entrup was airlifted to the Pomona Valley Hospital trauma center and then to the Los Angeles General Medical Center. He received a total of 34 doses of antivenom.
“When I see him and you watch him for two days, all of his muscles just twitching, his eyes, his lips, it’s terrifying,” his mother said in a KTLA5 interview.
Entrup declined to comment to the Clarion after being released from three days in the intensive care unit and has been recovering at home. His GoFundMe is active and available for those willing to participate.
