New bill will require free menstrual products in public colleges

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 367 on Oct. 8, requiring California public schools and colleges to provide free menstrual products in their restrooms.

The bill builds on the 2017 “Menstrual Equity for All Act.” This law mandated low-income schools in neglected areas to distribute free menstrual products to students.

The plan, which Newsom signed into law, expands the law to include grades six through twelve, community colleges, California State University and University of California systems beginning in the 2022-23 academic year. Schools and institutions in the private area are encouraged to do the same.

The health center will be in charge of those who need feminine products at Citrus College.

College Nurse Shauna Bigby said that the health center is already aware of the bill and already provides feminine resources.

Bigby said she has to wait to see if there are any additional requirements and Citrus will go from there.

Director of Facilities and Construction Fred Diamond said that he doesn’t know enough about the topic to give out details on the actions that will take place for AB 367.

“Once the requirements of AB 367 are understood, the process of procurement will commence,” Diamond said.

Dean of student affairs Dr. Maryann Tolano-Leveque said she doesn’t have much information about the bill, but will ensure the college complies by the time it takes effect.
