The “My Heritage Board Making” event took place Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. in the Campus Center Mall. The activity was part of Hispanic Heritage Month and invited students to create decorative boards celebrating their culture and identity.
“This was just to promote Hispanic Heritage Month,” Audrey Zepeda said, who helped organize the event through the Student Life and Leadership Development Program. “We have boards so everyone can come out and create their own board with their own heritage. It doesn’t have to be Hispanic—it’s for everyone on campus.”
“We really encourage students to come out, they’re free. And we have snacks.” said Zepeda.
Patricia Flores, a senator with the Associated Students of Citrus College, said events like this are important for building community. “I definitely really recommend any event that’s here on campus, it helps our community build and it creates a better environment for each of us students here at Citrus College.” Flores said.
Flores also said she enjoyed seeing her culture represented on campus.
“As a Latina here on campus, I thoroughly enjoy seeing my heritage out on display, I can appreciate a little bit more appreciation here on campus.” Flores said.
Areej Qasqas, advisor of Model United Nations and a part-time faculty member in political science and history, said events like this highlight the importance of cultural pride.
“It’s always great to see culture represented here, even if the crowd is small, it still matters,” Qasqas said.
The turn out rate of the event was around 4-5 people, with hope that next time more students and faculty will join.
