Crime on Citrus College’s campus remains low, according to the 2025 Annual Security Report. The report, released Oct. 1, shows a consistent trend of minimal incidents over the past few years, with no violent crimes reported on campus in 2024.
According to the Clery Act crime statistics, five total crimes were reported in 2024, a slight decrease from the six reported in 2023. Four incidents occurred on campus property, while one was recorded on public property adjacent to the college.
The offenses reported in 2024 included four motor vehicle thefts and one drug law arrest. According to the report, the motor vehicle thefts involved two electric scooters, one electric bike and one golf cart-not exactly a car chase situation. The asterisk in the report notes that the Clery Act counts scooters, bikes and golf carts as “motor vehicles,” which explains why these incidents made it into the official numbers.
These thefts remain the most common type of crime on campus. No incidents of murder, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault or burglary were reported.
Campus Safety Director Ben Macias emphasized the college’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe environment.
“Citrus College continues to be one of the safest community colleges in the state,” Macias said in a statement. “Violent crime on campus is extremely rare, and we work daily to keep it that way.”
The Clery Act, a federal law requiring colleges and universities to disclose campus crime data each year, ensures transparency and helps institutions strengthen campus safety policies.
Since 2007, Citrus has experienced a steady decline in crime rates, with drug and liquor law violations showing the most significant drop over time. In 2014, there were 43 reported drug violations; in 2024, that number was reduced to just one and four motor vehicle thefts.
The report makes a clear distinction between drug arrests and drug violations. Drug arrests involve law enforcement, while drug violations refer to disciplinary referrals handled through the college rather than the criminal justice system.
