On June 1, the Citrus College Campus Center was transformed into a colorful event center for the Lavender Celebration, where anyone is welcome who chooses to wear this stole to signify their choices.
This pre-commencement event, organized by Anastasia, the Pride Center coordinator, celebrated students as they transition from life at Citrus College to life after graduation, whether it be transferring to an institute of higher education or joining the workforce.
One of the most reassuring parts of the event was the wide faculty response and attendance, showing students that they support Citrus’s queer students and soon-to-be graduates.
Embroidered with a lavender version of Hootie the Owl, the college’s mascot, the graduation stoles shimmered beautifully as faculty, friends and family gathered to celebrate the graduates.
Hootie also posed with students for photos at the photo booth in the Campus Center as the atmosphere allowed for low-stakes conversations filled with safe vibes and an intimate atmosphere.
Premium music was played throughout the event, performed by several Citrus College students who all met each other on campus, the Citrus jazz musicians.
The Pride Center, founded in 2023, continues the tradition of honoring students with lavender stoles for those who choose to wear them as a badge of resilience and visibility.
