Citrus Women’s Basketball Holds off Grossmont in Home Opener

The Citrus College Women’s Basketball team defeated Grossmont College 57-46 on Wednesday Nov. 24 at Citrus College.

A quick start for Citrus helped set the tone early, as the women jumped out to a 14-4 lead. Grossmont would get back in the game and trailed 16-13 after one quarter of play.

Grossmont took the lead early in the second quarter before Citrus answered with a run of their own finishing the half off strong, going into the break with a 33-27 lead.

In the second half, Citrus never trailed. A spark off the bench was sophomore guard Elsie Mejia, who finished the game with 10 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists.

The defense of Citrus in the second half helped seal the victory, holding Grossmont to only four points in the fourth quarter.

Citrus was led by sophomore guard Janae Chamois, who contributed with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

Freshman forward Marisa Brown had a double-double scoring 10 points and bringing down 11 rebounds.

The win improves Citrus’ record to 3-2 in the early-going of the season. It was the first home game of the season.

Up next for the Citrus women is the Chaffey College tournament where the team will square off against Los Angeles Trade-Technical College on Friday Dec. 4 at 3:00 p.m.
