Review: ‘Motion 2020,’ virtual dance concert on Instagram during remote instruction

The Citrus College Visual and Performing Arts staff and students found a creative way to display their talents and put on an amazing show on Instagram during remote instruction  in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday May 29 the Visual and Performing Arts’s YouTube page live streamed a concert, “In Motion.”

The Watch Party” is a virtual dance concert, meaning that Karen from the Haugh Performing Arts Center and Jen, a dance teacher from the Citrus Dance Co. took the footage that the dancers sent them and edited it into individual dances, strung together to make a 30 minute concert.

Shawna Cook, Citrus College student for the dance and the film program, said in a message via Instagram on the Citrus Dance Co. account on May 29 that the show was beautifully done with each of the dancers bringing their own unique style to the concert.

“Each dancer filmed their own dance in a different location, one in a park or at home.  One of the dances I even recognized in my hometown Monrovia, ” Cook said.

The amount of passion that the dancers showed in their numbers was amazing to watch.

The concrete was performed by students and the dance numbers were choreographed by other students and or by  the dancers themselves. My own mother who watched the live stream with me was blown away by the performance.

Cook said the dancers filmed themselves at home and sent them to Jen and Karen, the production editors, who pieced together the dance concert.

Cook said Lisa, the other dance teacher did the opener and nine students created solo and small group pieces. She said Jen, the production editor choreographed the closer.

“In addition, Renee, another dance teacher made a guest appearance and the students ‘bowed,'” Cook said. “It’s very cool!”

Seeing the way people came together and come up with creative ways to showcase their talents was great. This form of entertainment helps people get through the pandemic.

People can view the recorded stream of the dance, Motion 2020  on their YouTube channel at Citrus College Visual and Performing Arts.
